Martin

Martin is a gem. He cycles up to the boardwalk every morning and clears away the rubbish left by inconsiderate fishermen and revelers.

Baldie

Moulting time for penguins is stressful at the best of times but if something goes wrong they look awful and sometimes die before they get new feathers. We felt sorry for Baldie. He had been running around with almost no feathers on his head for four weeks so we took him down to the Phillip Island hospital for a bit of TLC.

Penguin rescue

Sometimes penguins put themselves into difficult situations. A penguin had decided to moult under the end of the boardwalk at Port Melbourne and dogs were trying to dig it out so we came to the rescue and placed her in a nice safe place on the breakwater.

Research days can be hard work. It is often very difficult to catch  a penguin.

RUNNING AWAY

Penguins are not always the quiet cuddly little birds you imagine; they’re ferocious.  When I was 8 years old I ran away from home in Perth to a place called Safety Bay which has a small uninhabited island called Penguin Island close to the shore.  I swam across to Penguin Island and there I proposed to stay – for ever.  Before long I became hungry, I had no food so I went in search for some.  The snakes and goannas didn’t appeal.  A fairy penguin would be nice – I thought.  So I started digging out a nest with my bare hands and very soon the occupants attacked me leaving me scratched, bleeding and penguinless.  So with heavy heart and a light stomach I made my way home to an embarrassing welcome.
