The St Kilda little penguin colony is looked after by volunteers. Every weight measurement taken at the nest, every guide at the viewing area at sunset, every submission to a planning enquiry — it is all unpaid work by local residents who care about the birds.

That volunteer model works, but it still costs money. Banding equipment, torches, red filters, printed materials, insurance, data storage, permits, legal fees and the occasional larger project all add up. Most of the operating budget comes from small donations given at the viewing area or by people who have chosen to support the colony from a distance.

Why Your Donation Matters

A donation of any size goes directly into one of four buckets: research equipment (banding and monitoring kits), volunteer training (torches, safety gear, handbooks), advocacy (planning submissions and the occasional legal cost), and site infrastructure that Parks Victoria is not funded to provide. There are no paid staff drawing down from donations — every dollar you give is spent on work that protects the colony.

Because Earthcare is a small organisation, relatively modest donations have a much larger visible impact than they would at a major charity. A single $50 gift might cover the batteries and filters for a season of penguin guiding. A larger gift of a few hundred dollars could fund a new set of research bands or a season of reporting materials.

How to Donate

The most reliable way to donate to the ongoing work of the colony is directly through Earthcare St Kilda. Because the organisation and its banking arrangements change over time, please email team@stkildapenguins.com.au for up-to-date donation details — including current bank transfer details, any tax-deductibility status and instructions for donating in memory of someone.

Small donations can also be given on the night at the viewing area, where a donation container is usually available alongside the volunteer guides during the official guiding season.

Sponsorship and Corporate Support

Businesses, community groups and schools that want to support the colony at a larger scale are welcome to get in touch about project-specific or annual sponsorship. Past supporting organisations have helped fund specific research equipment, printed visitor materials or educational programmes. We do not accept sponsorship from industries whose activities could put the colony at risk.

For sponsorship enquiries, please email team@stkildapenguins.com.au with a brief outline of what you have in mind.

Leaving a Bequest

Several long-standing supporters of the colony have chosen to include Earthcare St Kilda in their will. Bequests of any size are deeply appreciated and are used to fund work that would not otherwise be possible within a year-to-year operating budget. If you are considering a bequest, please contact us confidentially at team@stkildapenguins.com.au for the correct legal wording.

Ways to Help That Do Not Involve Money

If a financial donation isn’t right for you now, there are other ways to help. Volunteering with Earthcare St Kilda is the single most valuable contribution anyone can make — details are on the How Can I Help page. Sharing the St Kilda Penguins website with friends planning a Melbourne visit, respecting the viewing rules when you are at the breakwater, and reporting anyone breaking them all contribute directly to the colony’s survival.
